Omkareshwar is one of the 12 revered Jyotirling shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river, the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu symbol(Om) is about 2km long and 1km wide. There are two temples here, one to Omkareshwar (whose name means "Lord of Omkaara or the Lord of the Om Sound") and one to Amareshwar (whose name means "Immortal lord" or "lord of the Immortals or Devas"). But as per the sloka on dwadash jyotirling, Mamleshwar is the jyotirling, which is on other side of Narmada river.

Omkareshwar lies at the meeting point of the rivers Narmada and the Kaveri. It is divided north to south by a deep gully. Visiting this exciting holy place is a worth seeing attraction. Ardent Lord Shiva followers will never miss to visit this place as they sense the real peace and harmony in their minds and thoughts. Scenic attraction has always been an exciting factor in Omkareshwar. Situated on the river banks, climate in Omkareshwar is absolutely pleasant and friendly. But the temperature in summer will be a bit hot and make you feel sultry.

People visiting to Omkareshwar can make a wide-collection of shopping as the town has the major shop lines across the streets surrounding the temple. Tourists can purchase quite several handcraft materials and other religious items here. It is merely very simple to reach this place and you can avail any mode of transportation to reach this pilgrimage town.

It is one of the holy Hindu sites in India by virtue of the presence a jyotirling, one of the twelve in India. As you probably know by now, the lingam is the symbol of Lord Shiva and there must be simply thousands of them in India. The jyotirling or the lingam of light, however, is special. It is believed to derive currents of power from within itself as opposed to an ordinary lingam which is ritually invested with mantra shakti (power invested by chants) by the priests.
